The Fabrique de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal – the parish’s building council – is wholly responsible for the preservation and restoration of Notre-Dame Basilica. The Fabrique is also in charge of security, with at least one authorized person on the church premises at all times to answer all visitor questions and deal with various requests.

Your contribution

Notre-Dame Basilica is a cultural and architectural treasure unique to Montreal. In order to preserve its priceless historic, architectural and artistic legacy now and in the future, we are obliged to ask our visitors for a small contribution. This is a common practice today in many other churches, cathedrals and basilicas around the world.

Major investments

During the past few years we have invested over $4 million in work of all kinds: upkeep to the roofing and windows, cleaning and restoration of the entire outside structure, and much more. Major spending has also gone to restoring the baptismal fonts and religious artwork in the church.

Our basic revenues from bequests, donations and vigil lights are not sufficient to cover these major financial investments. For this reason, we have had to request a small contribution from all visitors to the Basilica since 1999.

However, entry remains free for those coming to pray, attend Mass, make their Confession, meditate or take part in the liturgy of the hours.

Out of consideration for those attending religious worship or seeking spiritual comfort, and to simplify access to the church, entry is free of charge between 4:00 PM on Saturday and 12:30 PM on Sunday afternoon. There are no guided tours during this time.

We thank you for your understanding, interest and support in safeguarding and preserving this major historic site.
