About the Notre-Dame Basilica
Notre-Dame Basilica is Montréal's mother church and Canada's first Gothic Revival church. Its history, marked by the Sulpicians since its founding, is inseparable from that of the City of Montreal. It bears witness to its Catholic foundations and the constant links between the arts and religion. Imitated by several parishes, its style marked a turning point in the religious architectural tradition. A place of prayer and celebration of Catholic worship, Notre-Dame is also the setting for events of national importance, such as state funerals. Elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1982 by John Paul II and designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1989, its religious, historical and artistic importance makes it one of the jewels of Quebec's heritage and one of the most visited places in Montreal.
