Mission & Word from the Pastor

Our Mission

Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal is a place of gathering where the faithful receive the Word of God through liturgy, the Eucharist and the celebration of the sacraments. The parish is responsible for faith education at all ages.

As a Canadian national historic site and a privileged witness to history dating back to Montréal’s founding, the Basilica showcases its history along with its architectural, religious and artistic heritage.

The Basilica guarantees its development and sustainability by managing its activities in such a way as to maintain financial integrity and meet its long-term obligations.

The Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal, as well as Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, falls under the responsibility of La Fabrique de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal, a non-profit organization.

Since 1854, the Fabrique has owned and managed these two institutions, both great witnesses to Montréal’s history.

A Word from the Pastor

Welcome to Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal.

This magnificent church, located in Old Montréal, is a powerful symbol of our city and its history. It guards its mystical foundations. In addition to being an unmissable tourist attraction, Notre-Dame Basilica is a place for faith, spirituality, refuge and communion with God. Its main mission and true purpose is the proclamation of the Gospel.

Miguel Castellanos, Pastor, PSS

Chair of the Board of Directors of La Fabrique de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal

To all of you, we hope that your visit to Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal is a pleasant one.

- Miguel Castellanos, p.s.s., Pastor
Chair of the Board of Directors of La Fabrique de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal

In order to fulfil this mission, it manages a pastoral team committed to sharing the faith and finding a balance between its tourist, cultural and religious activities.

We have created a schedule for our priests to be available to the faithful who wish to confess, speak or have religious objects blessed. We have also chosen the Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur Chapel as a space for reflection, meditation and silence. To facilitate prayer, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed from Monday to Friday, as well as on Sundays.

I aspire to create a warm environment at the Basilica where everyone is welcomed with respect. Our dedicated employees ensure that the premises are respected and that visitors and parishioners are welcomed properly. We wish to accompany everyone interested in faith education. I hope that your wedding day will be the most beautiful memory of your life and that the baptism of your children will be the celebration of a new life, a life received from God. We accompany in faith, respect and hope those who request a funeral for a loved one.

The Basilica manages its activities, both religious and tourist, in a spirit of openness to all and in a spirit of solidarity with the most disadvantaged members of society. We also encourage people to get involved in local Christian communities.
